Ugh. Another Michael Moore piece chock full of urban myths. In it, Moore dramatically states that "no single event has galvanized the nation's attention against gays that the brutal, senseless murder of Matthew Shepard ... who was beaten and was left hanging on a fence to die by two thugs who beat him for no other reason than the fact that he was gay."
Michael gets it wrong yet again. Agendas aside, it's since become clear that Shepard's beating, while indeed tragic, had nothing to do with being gay and everything to do with two guys robbing someone for drug money.
Fred Phelps and Michael Moore actually have a little in common ... including a really whacked sense of reality.
I'll second that, Tom ... yet both often become media "icons" for their vaugely related mainstream counterparts ... Michael Moore for the Dems, most of which have been seeking to distance themselves from him as he's become more extreme ... and Fred Phelps, who is often mistakenly held up as the "Christian perspective" by the media, yet is clearly anything but Christ-like.
You have a penchant for overstatement. I know all about the 20/20 special. I blogged about it and got a link from Andrew Sullivan. While there was more than meets the eye to his murder, it's just as untrue to say it had nothing to do with his sexuality as it is to say it had everything to do with his sexuality.
